Sometimes we’re asked Why Tent Makers?
Partially because we would never be able live on the support we receive, especially in Europe which is so much more expensive than the USA with gasoline at $10 per gallon, milk at $8.70 per gallon and meat at $7 per pound (US dollars). But also, because we don’t do this for monetary gain, and don’t wish to be a burden to churches. However, we are none the less extremely grateful for every gift, because we truly couldn’t get along without them!
But it is primarily because tent-making seems, to us, to be the most effective missions strategy in post-Christian Europe, which is mostly secular and atheistic. Long centuries of ritualistic and institutionalized churches have created an attitude of apathy and rejection towards anything related to the “Christian church”.
Being known as missionaries would cause others to see us as strange, especially in this primarily Catholic nation where only nuns and priests become missionaries! Having jobs helps us fit in and enables us to be viewed as struggling right along with them to make ends meet. We’re seen as simple ordinary people just like them. And we’re glad, because that’s all we really are!
The only difference in us is the passion we have to introduce our people of Italy to the risen Savior, to the One who longs to have a living and vibrant relationship with them.
